Sun Chemical Shines Gold in the EFTA Awards
London, England
- May 08, 2007 -- Sun Chemical has won two gold awards at the European Flexographic Trade Association (EFTA) annual print awards ceremony. The awards recognise the company's outstanding performance as Supplier of the Year and its contribution to product development and innovation in the Technical Achievement category.
The gold award for Technical Achievement was presented to both Sun Chemical and customer DS Smith of Bristol, for the development of a water-based metallic ink that is capable of printing fine tones on clay coated liners without the need of an overprint varnish. Sun Chemical developed the ink in conjunction with DS Smith for use on a corrugated retail ready case for Coors brewery.
Paul Winstanley, Sun Chemical's technical sales manager who was in charge of the project, said: "Working closely with DS Smith to develop the water-based metallic ink presented an exciting breakthrough for Sun Chemical. The flexographic metallic ink, which is now commercially available in the UK, offers printers a more cost-effective metallic ink system for clay coated liners, compared to alternative solutions that require the application of an overprint varnish layer.
"The overprint varnishing process can often dull the quality of metallic ink, but our new product also enhances the look of the finished material without affecting its resilience. The new formula helped DS Smith overcome some production issues when producing work for one of their most prestigious accounts."
Both Mr Winstanley and Tony Palmer, General Manager of Sun Chemical UK's Packaging division, attended a gala dinner ceremony at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, where they were presented with the awards. Mr Palmer said: "We are thrilled to pick up two gold trophies at the event. As well as reaffirming Sun Chemical's position as a leading technological innovator, the metallic ink project, in conjunction with DS Smith, is also a fine example of why Sun Chemical has repeatedly scooped the EFTA annual print award for Supplier of the Year.
"The project illustrates how Sun Chemical works in close partnership with print companies to realise new aspirations and goals. It shows how, in offering an unprecedented level of customer service, Sun Chemical is able to build trust and confidence with its clients over time."
In the last seven years Sun Chemical has won a total of four gold and three silver awards in the Supplier of the Year category.
